GREETINGS FROM THE PRINCIPAL!
From the desk of Principal Dave Jackson…
STAR TESTING - We will be testing all Freshman, Sophomores and Juniors for STAR on May 15, 16 and 17th. The scores on this test are the benchmark for where we rank in the state on performance. We ask you as parents to make sure your students are in school all three days, on time and well rested and fed. We want them to put their best effort into this test so they have the opportunity to represent themselves and Calabasas High School in the best way possible.
PARENT ACCESS FOR ONLINE - The district has updated the computer system for CHS and the LVUSD. To get to your student's grades and attendance please use the following website address: http://www.lvusd.k12.ca.us/stuinfo/ Then follow the prompts.
LAST SEVEN (7) WEEKS - As we enter the last seven (7) weeks of school, this is not the time to slack off. We are presently taking AP Tests, the STAR testing is just around the corner beginning on May 15, Senior Awards night, the Prom, and Graduation along with a host of other activities. Please take care of our kids by being involved in their daily routine. Make sure they eat properly, sleep enough and find time for family along with school work. We need to keep the stress level to a minimum as our students put enough on themselves with Final Exams coming in June.
WASC SURVEY - WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) is the accreditation body that comes into schools and evaluates them for their accomplishments and provides suggestions for improvement. Our actual visit by the committee is in March of 2007, but we have begun working on our presentation. One of the important factors along with the student and staff survey is the parents’ input on how they feel about Calabasas High School. We will have an online survey for all parents as we will be gathering your opinions for WASC. We hope that when we notify you about where and when to do the survey, you will take the few minutes needed to complete it.
SUMMER SCHOOL - Summer school will be held at CHS this year as we alternate each year with Agoura High School. This year it is our turn. We at CHS do not run summer school and if you have questions, please contact the summer school office (818) 597-0742. There are two (2) programs that run at the same time on our campus; one is the LVUSD summer school (email address is: lvusdsummer@aol.com ) & the Foundation summer school (email address is: lvedfoundation@aol.com). Please direct your summer school questions to them.
Dave Jackson, Principal
PARENT FACULTY CLUB
Dear CHS Family and Friends:
Instead of our usual patter about who did what, we wanted to share our thoughts with you about something very important- how we use the funds you so generously donate to the PFC and CHS.
85% of the PFC budget is used to provide classroom materials, supplies and other things needed in our school to support the needs of the students at the school. Every single one of these purchases is for things that the school would not be able to buy out of the limited funds available through district and state funding. For example, when the state stopped funding teacher training, PFC stepped in with funding so our teachers could continue to attend training conferences. When the school wants to offer a new course, like it did recently with AP Art History, PFC funds teacher training and the classroom materials and equipment to run the class. Another 12% of our budget is used to support parents, students and teachers through programs like parent ed, teacher appreciation, welcoming our future 9 th grade parents and students, and other outreach activities.
As part of the PFC budget for the 2006-07 school year we were asked to fund a pilot program to help address the needs of our students who struggle in the classroom. Roughly 25% of our kids slip to a D or F grade at one point or another in high school, some for just one subject for a semester or two, others struggle throughout high school. This happens for a variety of reasons, everything from a breakup with a boyfriend to a divorce to unidentified learning issues. The school wants to be able to spend time and attention on getting these kids back on track, and they need our help to make it happen.
This kind of program speaks to the very heart of why we are all here: to improve the lives of all kids at CHS and to prepare them for their future after high school. We hope you will join us in welcoming this effort to tackle this difficult issue, and that you will continue to support the school’s efforts to bring innovative programs such as this to our campus to benefit all of our children.
On another note, we want to thank our wonderful hard working PFC volunteers. Deborah Ceizler, Lisa Moriarty and the Grad Nite committee sold over 300 Grad Nite tickets during Nutrition a few weeks ago. Iris Kent and the Nominating Committee called on our volunteers to create a new PFC Board for 2006-07. Christine Seth, Red Godfrey, Margy Mueller, Lucy Martin and their committee put together a wonderful Spring Event for our parents. The Captain and Chenille (Cindy Goldstein and Nathalie Blossom) provided entertainment for our Bingo players while the intensity at the poker tables grew as the stake did. At the end of the evening CHS was the big winner with funds raised toward improvements to the lower lunch area.
We are working on putting together committees for next year – it’s not too late to volunteer! Please contact us at: jmelanc@pacbell.net or cfcusick@yahoo.com. Hang in there – just a few weeks left! Joann and Carolyn - CHS PFC Co-Presidents 2004-2006

From PFC Treasurer - If anyone needs to be reimbursed for out of pocket expenses from a PFC event, program, hospitality, etc., please submit the receipts along with a reimbursement form. This form can be found in the Staff workroom in the PFC Box under Treasurer. You can either leave them in the PFC Box or mail them to me at the address on the form. If you have any questions feel free to call me at 818-222-0241. All reimbursements for the 2005-2006 school year must be received by June 30, 2006. Thank for your cooperation. Elise Feldscher - PFC Treasurer.
CURRICULUM
From the desk of Assistant Principal, Joe Skaff…
I'm staring directly at my 37th High School Graduation! Twenty of these years as a teacher, and seventeen as a school administrator. Thinking of the many experiences this year, I continue to say that "there is no place in the world I would rather be than right here, in High School." Although it's a bit difficult to explain, this is a very special place. Just before the ceremony will begin, there will be a time that I will look at our kids, try to remember all they have contributed to their peers, the staff and to the administration during the time that they have been at CHS.
Following graduation, I will do what I have done every year: spend some time alone, walk the campus, and just do some thinking. The frantic pace will be over, the tests complete, and I'll remember those things that happened here or there, the kids spoken with, the activities done, the games played, the laughter and the tears shared, the meetings, lunches, trips, those "special" times in the classrooms and on the courts, and I will remember this tremendous memory of the 2006 school year.
Each of these students will make their own mark. Some will go onto college or University and may be the ones who invent "the" cure. Some will serve their country, some will go into business, be interns, or discover that working with their hands in fixing an engine in a car is exactly what they are designed to do.
At this time of the year, with literally weeks left to go, I want us to focus on being strong "finishers." I hope that we have supported our kids, our staff and our families. As an administrator in a school, it has always been my goal to have our students develop as 'whole' people. I believe that we have a staff that has been available to these kids, that has put themselves right in front of them so that they are significant and impactful and so that they make a difference to them.
I am proud to be at Calabasas. The students continue to grow, continue to amaze us, and will continue to impact the world around them. Even after these many years, there is nowhere else that I would rather be than right here, right now! Have a wonderful Summer.

News from the CHS Math Department -by Robin Midiri
As always, this year is flying by at an exponential rate. For the remainder of this year, we can do a number of things to support our students’ success. Student absences are a major problem right now. Please get students to school and encourage them to be on time. Homework is critical! Students should not only do their homework but must ask questions about what they don’t understand. They can ask questions during class or support time. Please encourage students to make excellent use of their support time.
Upcoming big events include STAR testing and AP Exams. Teachers will be continuing to present important standards from the STAR test as well as doing some additional review before the STAR test on May 15, 16 and 17. Doing well on the STAR test not only helps our school, but also our students. It gives them great practice for multiple choice types of tests such as the SAT. It’s also a valuable diagnostic tool for teachers to evaluate student needs. As far as AP goes, we have large numbers of students working hard to prepare for the AP Calculus AB and BC, AP Statistics and AP Computer Science exams. Kudos to students and teachers, Mr. Hurwitz, Mrs. Midiri, Mr. McCollum, and Mr. Wells. Everyone puts in extra time and energy to be successful on these challenging but important exams. Thanks so much to the CHS PFC for supporting our review by helping with review sessions and supplementary materials.
Regarding the summer and the 2006-2007 school year, we have some recommendations. Choose courses carefully! In general, both the CHS and AHS math departments do not recommend students accelerating in math during the summer. Six weeks is too short to build a solid foundation since math courses build on one another. Please read the article entitled “Summer School Math Courses” in this newsletter by clicking on this link, Summer School Math Courses 05-06. We have many options to meet the mathematical needs of a wide variety of students. If you are not sure about a course, please contact your child’s current math teacher or Mrs. Midiri at X768.
Finally, we must thank the PFC. We are so fortunate to have involved and supportive parents. Thanks to our PFC, we can attend conferences, buy much needed basic supplies as well as important extra items such as graphing calculators, copiers, etc. We could not do the job we do for students without the PFC support.

We are most proud of your children and feel privileged to have been a part of their lives for the last four years.
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL OF DISCIPLINE AND SPORTS
From the desk of Assistant Principal, Mark Capritto…
As we move into May our athletic teams are beginning to enter the final weeks of the regular season. Swimming and Track are just beginning qualifying rounds for CIF competition. Members of our boys’ tennis team have returned from the Ojai Tennis Tournament where they performed as well as anyone could imagine as all of our boys participating moved on to the second round of play. The baseball team continues to hover around the 500 mark and still has an opportunity to move into the playoffs. Boys’ volleyball continues to play well as does boys’ golf. Finally, I would like to acknowledge our girls’ softball team but not simply for their level of play. We all need to offer our congratulations to Samantha Marder from our girls’ softball team as she was recently honored by the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in New York. Samantha was the recipient of the 2006 Pearl D. Mazor Award given to the Outstanding Jewish Female High School Scholar Athlete of the Year.
We are all very proud of our athletes, their individual and team accomplishments, and for the continued support of our parents. In addition, I would like to take an opportunity to thank our coaches for their dedication to Calabasas High School. They are working very hard to provide our athletes with an opportunity to participate in a very challenging and demanding league. We certainly appreciate all they do.
Finally, as the year winds down I would like to thank Larry Edwards, Don Cusick, and Lorrie Thompson for their commitment and enthusiasm throughout the year - their jobs are taxing. Each of these individuals works extremely hard and we could not have completed the year without them. We are looking toward our Summer Camps and next year for greater participation at every level with a rejuvenated commitment by our coaches, players, parents, and administration. Thank you for a great first year. Mark Capritto, Ed. D.

HEALTH OFFICE
We’re all aware of how the world has changed and how many challenges and temptations our children face. Your team here at C.H.S. cares deeply about the safety and well being of all of the students here. For your peace of mind and the security of your children, we are now able to supply Five-Panel Urine Dip Kits that you can purchase in the C.H.S. Health Office and use in the privacy of your own home if you fear your child may be at risk. These kits test for drug use: amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates and marijuana. The results are instantaneous and for your eyes-only. There is no need for an outside lab’s involvement. This test usually costs between $19.95 and $29.99 but we are able to offer it to you for $5.00. Cash or checks made out to C.H.S. are fine. No credit cards please. Please contact the Health Clerk, Joey Levin at 222-7177 ext. 223 to confirm the kits availability and with any other questions or concerns. The Health Office is open between 7:15am and 3:45pm Monday through Friday.
A word of advice from our PFC Co-Presidents: Our own Lost Hills Sheriff’s Juvenile Intervention team has told us that using kits like these to occasionally test your child, even if you don’t suspect drug use, can give him or her the comfortable excuse they need to “just say No” to a peer offering them drugs or alcohol.
