GREETINGS FROM THE PRINCIPAL!

From the desk of Principal Dave Jackson…

As we end this 2005-06 school year I would like to take this opportunity to thank the teachers and staff at Calabasas High School for all the hard work that has been accomplished this year. I would also like to thank the students and parents who have been wonderful welcoming me and the new administrative team this year. It seems like just yesterday, we were beginning the new adventure here at CHS and now it is time for graduation. Graduation starts at 6:00 PM sharp on Friday June 16th. I know the parents are saying, it was just yesterday I took you to kindergarten and now you are graduating high school. Our graduating students will be attending colleges all over the country next year and we wish them only the best as they continue their education. You can be very proud of this senior class. We do not say goodbye to the senior class but we say "See you later" as they will always be part of the CHS history.

We say goodbye to some staff members who are retiring or going on to other activities in their lives. Leaving us are Mr. Totheroh, Mr. Meinhardt, Ms. Dickens, Mrs. Kipnis, Mr. White, Ms. Foran and Ms. Baird. Hopefully our paths will cross again soon. We have been interviewing teachers and hope to have all vacancies filled shortly.

Summer school will be held at Calabasas High School this summer and we expect about 1800 students from Calabasas and Agoura High Schools to attend daily, so remember that the traffic will be heavy at arrival and dismissal times. Summer school begins at 7:30AM and ends at 1:10PM. Summer school dates are June 20 until July 27.

We are in the running for the NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL AWARD next year which would put us in the top 3% of high schools through the country. We will be going through a Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC) accreditation the next year so to say the least it will be a busy school year for all stakeholders of Calabasas High School. The official visit will be in March of 2007 but we have been working all year and will continue to work over the summer and the Fall semester to get ready for the visiting team of educators.

I would like to wish you a HAPPY and SAFE summer and have you all come back to us August 21 for registration week with school beginning the next week.

PARENT FACULTY CLUB

Dear CHS Family and Friends:
As the school year draws to a close, we want to recognize a few individuals who have given generously of their time throughout the year: the members of the PFC Executive Board. The CHS/PFC could not operate without their dedication and hard work.

Sadly, we must say goodbye to three valuable volunteers who are leaving CHS as their youngest children are graduating. Thanks go to outgoing Treasurer Elise Feldscher for nine years of dedicated volunteer service to Calabasas High School, Secretary Susan Sarazen, who will be leaving us for only one year but will be greatly missed, and Parliamentarian Iris Kent for her fifteen years of service as a loyal volunteer and past PFC President. These wonderful and capable women have given us and the school community the greatest gift of all, their time, energy and expertise for many, many years. For that we will be eternally grateful and it has been a tremendous honor to work with them.

Thousands of volunteer hours were donated by dedicated committee chairs, committee members and a tireless army of willing volunteers and donors, all to benefit the students of CHS. The education of our children is a community effort, and we thank you for becoming an active member of this supportive community.

We would like to acknowledge and thank the PFC Executive Board members for their tireless efforts this year. Arie Gersh as VP of Counseling/College and Career, Membership and Donor Drive VPs Ellen Dubick & Andrea Testa, Fall Event VPs Allison Weisman & Michele Spatz, Registration VP’s Penny Salomon, Jane Contis, and Mary Jo Ammon, Red Godfrey and Christine Seth for the Spring Event, Unsung Hero VP’s Shari Gillis and Beth Preece, our Volunteer Coordinator Cheryl Kramer and VP’s of Communications Nancy Fisher and Sue Lemberger who make this online newsletter possible.

The PFC has many committees that work until the very last moment to finish up the year. The hard working Grad Nite Committee, under the guidance of Debra Ceizler and Lisa Moriarty is making sure our graduates will have a Safe and Sober Grad Nite. Iris Kent and the Nominating committee put together a beautiful end of the year PFC Installation luncheon, and teachers and staff were treated to a wonderful lunch in our beautifully decorated library by Susan Sanett, Darlene Polidoro, Mindy Hibler and their committee.

We would also like to give special thanks to Principal Dave Jackson ,who came into a difficult situation and led with grace, humor and a driving hunger to make positive changes in the school. We could not do any of this without his support and the support of our capable and caring administrators, teachers and staff at CHS. You are all second to none!

At the end of this school year the leadership of PFC will transfer into the energetic and capable hands of new PFC Co-Presidents Shari Gillis and Beth Preece. We look forward to working with them to insure a smooth transition and great start to the new school yearIt has been a privilege to lead the PFC and to get to know and work with all our wonderful volunteers. We have made lifetime friendships, laughed a lot, cried just a little, and feel we helped make positive changes in the lives of children. Who could ask for anything more? , We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.
We are all in this together so let’s keep up the good work. Have a safe and fun filled summer, and we’ll see you all in the fall!

CURRICULUM

From the desk of Assistant Principal, Joe Skaff…

Dear Graduates,

I want to congratulate each of you for a wonderful year. The 2005-2006 school year brought a ton of laughs, a bunch of wonderful activities, and memories to last forever. You went through some of the most difficult classes we could throw at you, fought some of the greatest challenges on the field, courts and gymnasiums against kids you didn’t know, at schools you had never visited, and came away victorious. I'm proud of you.

You have learned that you could draw and paint and create from clay and glass, and much of what you did hangs throughout the District offices and on our school walls. Many of you never DREAMED of acting or singing, and just LOOK at what you id! did! You put on spectacular and very professionally done performances. Your talents have been enhanced with creating web sites, you've created businesses and you've spent time helping children at other schools through Project Socrates. Good for you!

Remember your New York, Florida and Boston trips, your once-in-a lifetime events and activities and the many activities that you have gone through this year. Keep your high school experiences close to your heart as long as you can, because, believe it or not, it will pass quickly. You may one day say, "This is a place that I NEVER want to stay away from!" Stretch yourselves toward your goals and dreams, and don't worry if you change your plans and direction along the way.

Try to keep the words of what your classmates have shared with you during these past four years. My hope for you is that you are happy in what you attempt, that you search after your "Big Dream," and that you do whatever you do with great gusto and fullness of heart. Each of you will make a mark in this world. Each of you will make a difference. You will be heard from. We are all proud of you.

Congratulations on your Graduation!

Science - The Science Department at CHS recognizes Mr. Larry Walker, AP Chemistry/ Chemistry teacher, for his dedication and many accomplishments. We mention only two in this letter.

Science Bowl - Mr. Walker mentors and guides the CHS Science Bowl Team. The team competed with 23 other schools at the Annual Regional Science Bowl Competition that was held at Cal Tech’s Jet Propulsion Laboratories on February 11, 2006. Contributing members were team captain Michael Esgro, Chris Doran, Jeffery Greenfeld, Milena Krstic, and Jacob Schwarz. The competition tests both knowledge of all sciences and mathematics and the rapidness of responses and calculations. The competition was a wonderful, challenging experience for all concerned.

GLATSA (Greater Los Angeles Teachers Science Association) - Mr. Larry Walker was honored as keynote speaker at the annual GLATSA Conference held February 18, 2006 at the downtown Science Center, Exposition Park. Mr. Walker’s presentation was entitled “California Rocks” and presented the greatest stories of all sciences through the lens of California, primarily using the vehicle of California Geology. Several hundred teachers attended the conference and Mr. Walker relished the opportunity to share his enthusiasm with his colleagues.

LIBRARY NEWS - As we approach the end of the school year, we are extremely busy with the return of library materials and textbooks. Please check with your student to make sure that they are attending to all fines and overdue books. All library books (not textbooks) are due on or before June 2 nd. Textbooks may be returned to the library when they are no longer needed for the class.

All textbooks must be returned to the library by 1:00 on June 16 th .

Seniors need to be especially vigilant of keeping their records clear so that it does not affect their graduation activities! We are happy to review library records with a student if they are concerned. The library is deeply grateful to the parent volunteers and generous PFC! Duffy Gale, Ingrid Wang, Josie Cyffka, Joan Grossman, Anna Ku and Fran Blaker ~we appreciate all of the hours you have spent helping in the library.

Have a safe and restful summer!

It’s hard to believe that the 2005-2006 school year has come to an end. Thank you to our teachers, staff, parents, and students for a fabulous year making Calabasas High School the great school that it is. I thank all the parent volunteers for the countless hours of helping in our offices, running off materials, financial support, luncheons, participation in booster groups, site council, and WASC focus groups. COLLEGE AND CAREER

From College & Career Advisor Susi Weissman

Another year has gone by so quickly. I’ve had the pleasure of watching students, who came to Calabasas High School four years ago, grow from innocent ninth graders to the accomplished young adults they are today. Most of our graduating seniors will attend college in the fall, while others will go to specialty programs to develop their careers or take a gap year to travel and work. All of them have bright futures ahead of them. I look forward to seeing those who stop by for a visit when they return home on holiday breaks. It is so much fun to see them continue to grow into adulthood and hear about their college experiences.

Each year the seniors are asked to complete a survey. They have the option of having their post secondary destinations publicized. The information which appears on the shcholarships and destinations lists which can be viewed by clicking on the following link, Scholarships and Destinations 2006, is based on these surveys. Many of the students provided the requested verification of their college acceptances and, if applicable scholarships, but not all. The number following the name of the institution indicates all of the students who reported that they will attend that particular school. Names of students who did not want their information made public or who did not turn in a survey do not appear on the list. More detailed statistics will be posted at a later date in the announcement section of the CHS website under College & Career.

Summer is a wonderful time to gain experiences both academic and non-academic. The College and Career section of calabasashigh.com is full of summer program information, jobs and community service opportunities. It is wise to check the site regularly for upcoming events and testing information. Also, listed on the site are links to many other college and career related websites. Also, please check the ads at the end of this month’s newsletter for additional information.

Additional summer tips:

  • Journal writing is a great way to capture material for later use in college admissions and scholarship essay writing.
  • Also, while on vacation, plan to visit colleges. Take an organized tour of the campus. Eat a meal on campus. Explore the area around the campus. Read a college newspaper.
  • Pick up a college guide such as Fiske’s, at a bookstore and read.
  • Read for pleasure!
  • Visit campus website before the campus visit.
  • If you are far away from home, take a transcript with you and call ahead to find out if you can have an interview or simply meet with a member of the admissions staff.

- A college visit tip sheet is available in the College & Career Center.

  • Don’t sit around this summer; volunteer or get a job. Many colleges will look at how you spend your time outside of the classroom.
  • Juniors, start writing college application essays.
  • Research and begin applying for scholarships (see our website)

CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2006 AND FAMILIES OF OUR GRADUATES!

Everyone, have a wonderful and safe summer.

HEALTH OFFICE

Message From The Health Office: Parents, please come collect any medications your student has kept in the Health Office this past year. We cannot entrust them to the student; they must be picked up by an adult. School is out, as you know, June 16th, however, my office remains open until June 21st. All medications not picked up by then will be disposed of. Additionally, new “Daily Medications Taken During School Hours” forms MUST be filled out properly for next semester. We cannot store and dispense medications of any type unless they are properly documented, labeled, and packaged. You will receive the forms and instructions in your registration packets. Any questions, please contact Joey Levin in the Health Office at 222-7177, ext 223.

We’re all aware of how the world has changed and how many challenges and temptations our children face. Your team here at C.H.S. cares deeply about the safety and well being of all of the students here. For your peace of mind and the security of your children, we are now able to supply Five-Panel Urine Dip Kits that you can purchase in the C.H.S. Health Office and use in the privacy of your own home if you fear your child may be at risk. These kits test for drug use: amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates and marijuana. The results are instantaneous and for your eyes-only. There is no need for an outside lab’s involvement. This test usually costs between $19.95 and $29.99 but we are able to offer it to you for $5.00. Cash or checks made out to C.H.S. are fine. No credit cards please. Please contact the Health Clerk, Joey Levin at 222-7177 ext. 223 to confirm the kits availability and with any other questions or concerns. The Health Office is open between 7:15am and 3:45pm Monday through Friday.

A word of advice from our PFC Co-Presidents: Our own Lost Hills Sheriff’s Juvenile Intervention team has told us that using kits like these to occasionally test your child, even if you don’t suspect drug use, can give him or her the comfortable excuse they need to “just say No” to a peer offering them drugs or alcohol.

City’s Public Transit Program Expansion - The City’s free Public Transit Shuttle program began in 1997, providing public transportation (white shuttle) service with enhanced routes and times to serve the needs of the students. Building upon the success of this program, shuttle service was expanded to provide enhanced routes and times to serve the needs of the students at all City of Calabasas public schools.

The 2004 -2006 City subsidized school bus program was deemed successful at increasing school bus ridership overall, thus reducing the number of vehicles trips to each school. To continue with the success of that program the City will enhance its peak school hour public transportation service (white shuttle) as needed. Starting in the 2006 - 2007 school year the City’s existing public transit program will implement the expansion and enhancement required to continue the benefits of the school bus program. The City’s existing public transit program will modify routes to begin earlier and will include three separate loops during each peak hour route. These proposed services may be modified as needed and schedules are subject to change based on school schedules and resource availability.
