PARENT FACULTY CLUB

Dear CHS Family and Friends:

Spring is almost upon us, and with that comes college acceptance letters, Senior Prom and the inevitable buzz of spring fever all across campus. Many of our kids will be faced with the stress of the CA High School Exit Exam, their first SAT, or STAR testing. Tensions can run high across the campus.

In the high excitement and sometimes the deep disappointment of it all , we as parents need to all take a deep breath and remember that our children are still young and need our adult support and guidance to put these things into perspective. One bad test day or one acceptance or rejection letter does not determine a lifetime, and the world will not end if you go to the Prom with a less than perfect date. It is in these times, when our kids act more like the terrible twos than the adults they are about to become, that they need to be reminded that we love them, and that the good decisions they make day in and day out do more to determine their futures than the events of any one day or the opinion of any one person.

We would like to thank some special PFC volunteers who helped make life flow more smoothly on campus by helping out in the offices whenever they are needed: Elise Feldscher,Arie Gersh, Roberta Goldman, Cindy Goldstein, Marta Kurland and Beth Preece. They answer phones so our office assistants can go to lunch, and take on jobs where extra hands are needed to keep things flowing smoothly for our kids. If you would like to help out, too, please call our wonderful PFC Volunteer Coordinator, Cheryl Kramer, finds helping hands whenever and wherever is needed.

Our next PFC meeting is Monday, March 13 at 9:30 AM in the Lecture Hall. Items on the agenda include next year's PFC Board and our upcoming Texas Hold'em & Bingo Fundraiser on April 21. See you there!

Carolyn Cusick & Joann Melancon, PFC Co-Presidents

Grad Nite - REMINDER.. REMINDER.. REMINDER Hello Senior Students and Parents:

Before you know it, Graduation and Grad Night will be here. Each year our PFC puts on a tremendous grad night evening for our Seniors. The goal of the evening is to have a Safe, Sober and Secure celebration for our grads of 2006. A great amount of planning goes into Grad Night. We need your support to make this year's grad night event a success. Within

the week, each senior family will receive a donation request form to raise money to hold this event. The goal is to raise $10,000. We feel that we can raise this money through a donation drive, rather than having several small fundraisers. All donations of any amount would be appreciated. Donation forms have been already sent out in the mail. Please return them as soon as possible, so that we can achieve our goal of a safe and fun filled evening. Donations will pay for entertainment, grad night senior gifts, security, and all extra surprises.

Thank You....Lisa Moriarity and Deborah Ceizler, PFC Grad Night Chairs

PFC Meetings – Monday, March 13 at 9:30 AM, and Monday, April 3 at 9:30 AM in the Lecture hall.

PFC Spring Fundraiser - The 2006 Calabasas High PFC Texas Hold ‘Em tournament and bingo fundraiser will be held Friday, April 21, 2006 at 7:00 PM at the Calabasas Agoura Community Center. Join us for an evening of fun and “Help us help our Students!” For ticket information click on this link: Texas Hold Em Fundraiser 03-06

CURRICULUM
Math Department News

Dear CHS parents and students:

At this time, you are trying to decide what courses to take next year. My department would like to take this opportunity to get some information out. Included are two items. One is a math paths flowchart, click on this link to view: Math Paths Flow Chart 03-06. The other is the letter handed out to all Algebra 2 students called "What to do After Algebra 2", click on this link to view: What to Do After Algebra II 03-06. We have a lot of excellent options and I hope this information will be helpful.

Second semester will be very busy. We will have STAR and AP testing as well as getting a huge start on our WASC accreditation. State tests like STAR are becoming more and more important. Teachers are working hard to get everything done and help students be successful. We remind parents to encourage students to use their support time well when it starts again in March. If you have any questions, please email me at midiri@lvusd.org or call me at 222-7177, X768.

Thank you,

Robin Midiri, Math Dept. Chairperson

Music Department News

New for next year,Mr. Kohen will be teaching two new UC/College Prep approved classes at CHS: a music appreciation class and an all strings orchestra class. Course information follows.

MUSIC APPRECIATION-Music appreciation is a course that is open to all interested students. It is designed to give students a broad understanding of music as a functional art and how it functions in western and non-western societies. Students explore the history of music in America and other cultures including the popular styles of today, study the fundamentals of musical communication and literacy, and perform, compose and improvise music. Listening is an integral part of the course and emphasis is placed on critical analyses of a variety of musical examples.

ORCHESTRA-Calabasas High School will be offering Orchestra as a course for credit for the 2006-07 school year. Students who study violin, viola, cello or bass are encouraged to register for the class, as are others who play string instruments (like classical guitar, piano, harp). This is not a beginning string instruction class and consent of the instructor is required. Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of their instrument and reading music. Students will have the opportunity to study and perform orchestral music, perform in chamber groups (string quartet, piano trio, pit band, etc.) and participate in the varied and rich musical life of CHS.

PARTNERSHIP

For those of you who do not know, Calabasas High School is twinned with the school, The Gymnasia Herzilya, in Tel Aviv, Israel. The program has been ongoing since 2000 and is an amazing success. The Gymnasia Herzilya is a wonderful school and our students have been fortunate to become acquainted with the Gymnasia students as they have traveled here each year. This past winter break some of our students had the opportunity to visit their sister school. It was a wonderful experience for all, exploring the sights of Israel and getting to know the students at the Gymnasia. Calabasas High has a new delegation of Israeli students arriving in March. The Partnership Club meets every Monday at lunch in room H214 with coordinator Patti Harris and is open to all students. Please encourage your student to join us for this very worthwhile project. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to know people their own age from another country. We are still looking for housing opportunities our students and their families to host a student from Israel during their visit.
